Fordham wins the Atlantic 10 Championship

After losing twice on Championship day in 2010, Fordham was not going to be denied this year in the Atlantic 10 Championship. The Rams gritted and battled their way through one of the most competitive tournaments in conference history. Fordham has been in the Championship before (2005, 2010), but this time there would be no denying the Rams.

Fordham's pitcher Jen Mineau has bounced back from dealing with an early season injury to go on one of the most impressive pitching runs in Atlantic 10 history. Mineau has not allowed a run since Dayton's Lauren Nacke took her deep in a doubleheader at Fordham on April 23rd. Since that point Mineau has gone 62 straight innings without allowing a run, which is an absolutely remarkable feat. In the Atlantic 10 tournament, she threw all three of Fordham's games going 3-0 while striking out 27 hitters in 24 innings. She was not going to let Fordham lose while she was in the circle.

Bridget Orchard
Coach Orchard offense was tested by some great pitching in Katy Hackett, Sara Plourde, Erin Gallagher, and Taryn Ashway, but they always found a way to score. Beckah Wiggins started hitting like she was during her 2010 season when she was named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Year. Wiggins had struggled a bit this season, but she really broke out in a big way this weekend. Wiggins drove in both runs against Charlotte on Thursday, scored the winning run against UMass on Friday, and in the Championship game against St. Joseph's, she reached base each time she stepped to the plate, going 1-2 while reaching on a walk and an error and she scored one of Fordham's runs in the 2nd inning. That is a great sign for Fordham as they head into regionals.

Fordham is playing with all the confidence and swagger in the world right now and they are going to be a brutal draw for a seeded team. Fordham has played a brutal schedule this year and while they struggled a bit early on it is clear that that schedule prepared them. Every other team in the Atlantic 10 should take note of that when creating its schedule for next year.
