Fordham in the NCAA Tournament

Fordham is now officially in the 2011 NCAA Tournament, but now they must wait to see where they will be sent. The selection show will take place on ESPNU at 10 PM.

Fordham will come into the tournament as one of the hottest teams in the country and with a fairly high RPI, the Rams should find themselves seeded 2nd or 3rd in a 4-team Regional. The most interesting part will be where the Rams end up playing.

Last year, Fordham was sent to the University of Maryland in College Park, MD and it would not be surprising if the Rams returned there once again this season. Maryland has the facility and the RPI to host, as well being in an easily accessible location, especially for Northeast schools. The next few locations are a bit more complicated for a variety of reasons. Penn State currently finds itself squarely on the bubble, but the selection committee needs hosts in the Northeast and Penn State is home to one of the finest facilities in the nation. Penn State did sweep its final four games, which is good for Fordham. Now there is one other possible host in the Northeast, but they may not have the facility requirements to host. Syracuse is a lock to make the NCAA tournament and they may have an outside shot at hosting. Syracuse's field is a little on the small side, but RPI wise and proximity wise it would be a logical fit for Fordham to be sent to. One other remote possibility is Hofstra, but since the Pride are unlikely to even make the field, it's not going to happen.

Now if Fordham does not play at one of the schools mentioned above, the Rams will have to jump on an airplane and at that point it's anyone's guess as to where they will end up. Fordham has had a great season and they deserve to stay in the Northeast for the postseason.

  1. I hope Hofstra makes it, and they should. But probably some SEC team with a .500 record will get in instead.
