Yesterday, the Atlantic 10 announced that the championship game of this year's Atlantic 10 Tournament will be televised by CBS College Sports. The championship game was also televised back in 2008 when the tournament was also held at Charlotte. It does appear that the championship game will actually be televised live instead of on tape delay.
Now my thoughts...
Well it's about time for the A10 to be on some sort of television. This CBS College Sports contract that the A10 signed a few years ago has been an absolute dud, especially for softball. Just two softball games have been televised and I find that very disappointing. Last year the Atlantic 10 had the top two pitchers in the country in terms of strikeouts, but did not have a single game televised. Both the SWAC and MEAC had more games televised. Now no offense to those conferences, but they do not have the same level of play as the Atlantic 10. Not to mention those games were on ESPNU as opposed to CBS College Sports. ESPNU is a much better platform for national exposure than CBS College Sports. For the A10's next contract they need to get games on ESPNU and ESPN3

The Atlantic 10 and Rain
Well the conference standings this year have been closer than ever, but they have been a little skewed by some rainouts. The rainouts have been very prevalent the past couple weeks, which has prompted some fervent discussion around the A10 among everyone that follows the conference.
I am not going to comment on the specifics of the rainouts since I was not at the field, but there are some aspects that need to be changed or made into uniform policies. Some examples of the policies that I would like to see...
1. If it is scheduled to rain on a Friday, the field should be made playable for Sunday. It is really unacceptable to not play games two days after it last rained
2. If rain is in the forecast for Saturday, don't just play a single game on Friday: play a doubleheader.
3. Make sure there is some accountability, don't let teams cancel against teams at the top of the standings only to turn around and play against teams at the bottom of the standings
4. Invest in a tarp
5. Make the effort to get the game in even if it is at a different location
Just an example of everything that is wrong with the current policy (Just looking at the past three years)
UMass, Fordham, and Charlotte have been rained out 13 times
La Salle and Rhode Island have been rained out 0 times
So now that that is all out there, I believe these are the tie breakers that the conference using to determine seeding (of course they are no longer available on the conference site)
If anyone has them please post them in a comment or email them to atlantic10softball@gmail.com
1. Head to head record
2. Record vs. highest ranked team (down to the the very bottom of the standings if necessary)
3. Coin flip

The Atlantic 10 and NCAA RPI III
The NCAA released its second official RPI of the year and here is how the A10 stacked up as individual teams out of 289 teams in Division 1 softball.
41 Fordham
59 UMass
114 St. Joseph's
140 Temple142 St. Louis
170 Charlotte
192 Dayton
224 George Washington
265 Rhode Island
267 St. Bonaventure
276 La Salle
So what does this mean for the A10 teams? Well not too much for anyone other than Fordham and now UMass. The Minutewomen have been slowly creeping up the RPI and if they keep this pace up they could end up with an at large, however they are still very far away from that. Fordham, on the other hand is moving in the opposite direction and if the Rams cannot get things going in the right direction soon they could play themselves out of an at large bid. No other team is within striking distance for a bid, though a couple teams are near that bottom spot in the RPI of 289.
Does this sound familiar? Well it is because nothing really changed RPI wise. It is concerning however that La Salle has inched closer to that bottom RPI mark
So how does the A10 stack up against other conferences?
1 Pac-10 21.75
2 Big 12 24.7
3 SEC 49.7
4 Big Ten 59.1
5 ACC 72.1
6 CUSA 76
7 Sun Belt 86.3
8 Mountain West 93.5
9 Big East 106
10 Big West 106.2
11 Atlantic Sun 124.6
12 WAC 125.6
13 Missouri Valley 135.4
14 Southland 143.8
15 Mid-American 146.9
16 Horizon 147.4
17 Southern 154.7
18 Big South 162.7
19 OVC 168.7
20 A10 171.8
21 CAA 177.3
22 America East 182.8
23 Summit 187.7
24 Northeast 197.9
25 Ivy 198.8

27 Independent 220.1
28 Metro-Atlantic 223.1
29 Patriot 227.3
30 Mid-Eastern 249.3
31 SWAC 265.8
The A10 dropped down to number 20 out of 31 conferences. This shows that the A10 needs to improve non conference results. Every game has consequences and there is no time for anyone to take a game off.
